Bathroom renovations built for Morwell homes

Morwell Bathroom Renovations designs and rebuilds bathrooms, ensuites, laundries and powder rooms across Morwell 3840 and the surrounding Latrobe Valley. We are a local team of licensed and insured trades, and every wet area we build is waterproofed to Australian Standard AS 3740. Our work runs from a single tired shower recess to a complete strip-out and rebuild, and every project starts the same way: with a design consultation in your home.

Morwell has a housing story all of its own. The post-war growth of the power industry filled the town with Housing Commission and State Electricity Commission homes, followed by brick veneer streets in the sixties and seventies and newer estates on the edges of town. Many of those houses still have their original bathroom, or a quick makeover laid over the top of it. Behind the tiles we often find failed waterproofing, tired framing and drainage that was never set up for a modern shower. We plan for that from the first visit, so there are fewer surprises once work begins.

Our aim is simple. We want to give you a bathroom that is comfortable to use every day, easy to clean, sound underneath and designed around the people who live in your home.

What a well-built bathroom gives you

A good renovation is more than new tiles. Done properly, it changes how the whole house works.

  • A room that stays dry underneath. Waterproofing to AS 3740, correct floor falls and sealed penetrations protect the framing and floor.
  • Fresh air and less mould. Ducted exhaust that vents outside, sized for the room, clears steam before it settles.
  • Storage where you need it. Drawers, niches and cabinets planned around your daily routine.
  • Comfort through the valley winters. Insulated walls, warm lighting and options for heated floors and towel rails.
  • Safety now and later. Slip-resistant floors, level-entry showers and blocking for grab rails.
  • A clear plan. A written scope that says exactly what is included before any work starts.

Knowing the homes of Morwell and the valley

After years of working in the Latrobe Valley, we have a good idea of what we will find in each kind of house. That knowledge shapes the design and the scope.

Commission and SEC homes

Timber and fibro homes from the late 1940s and 1950s are common through Morwell, Yallourn North and parts of Moe and Traralgon. They usually sit on stumps, with a small bathroom, a separate toilet and a laundry at the back. Timber floors make it easier to reframe for a level-entry shower or lower a shower base. Fibre-cement linings from this era may contain asbestos, so testing is part of our planning before anything is removed.

Brick veneer from the sixties and seventies

These homes have slightly larger bathrooms with a bath, a vanity and a shower recess. Pastel tiles, mosaic floors and failing shower bases are typical. Some sit on concrete slabs, which makes moving drainage more involved, though still very achievable.

Churchill’s planned streets

Churchill was laid out as a planned town in the sixties and seventies. Many of its homes share similar bathroom layouts, which helps us anticipate framing and plumbing positions before we arrive.

Newer homes and estates

Homes from the 1990s onward in Traralgon, Morwell and Moe usually have an ensuite and a main bathroom. The work there is about improving a builder-grade room: a bigger shower, better ventilation, more storage and finishes that feel personal.

Farmhouses and rural properties

Around Boolarra, Yinnar, Tyers, Glengarry, Toongabbie and Jeeralang Junction we work on farmhouses and rural homes, many on tank water and septic systems. We plan around both, and we allow for the extra travel and access that rural work can involve.

Our renovation services

We offer twelve services, and most projects combine several of them. Complete bathroom renovations bring together design, demolition, plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tiling and fit-off under one plan. Ensuite renovations make the most of compact rooms beside the main bedroom. Small bathroom renovations focus on clever layouts, wall-hung fixtures and storage that frees up floor space.

Shower conversions remove an old bath or a hobbed recess and replace it with a walk-in or level-entry shower. Accessible bathrooms are designed for people with limited mobility, older residents and anyone planning to stay in their home long term. Leaking shower repairs find and fix the cause rather than covering over it.

Laundry renovations give busy households a practical, durable space, often near the back door. Powder room renovations create a stylish second toilet for guests. Bathroom tiling, waterproofing to AS 3740, vanity and storage installation, and our bathroom design service round out the list. You will find a page for each below.

Waterproofing to AS 3740 on every job

Waterproofing is the part of a bathroom you never see, and it is the part that matters most. A failed membrane lets water into the framing, floor and walls, where it causes rot, mould and loose tiles long before anything shows on the surface.

We waterproof every wet area to AS 3740, the Australian Standard for waterproofing domestic wet areas. That includes the shower floor and walls, the bathroom floor, the junctions between walls and floors, around penetrations such as taps and wastes, and the areas around baths and basins. We use compatible products from one system, apply them to the manufacturer’s instructions, allow proper curing time and photograph the membrane before tiling. Those photos form part of your handover documents.

Design consultations

Every project starts with a design consultation in your home. We measure the room, look at the framing, floor, plumbing, drainage and ventilation, and talk about how you use the space. We discuss layout, storage, lighting, finishes and accessibility, and we note any problems such as leaks, loose tiles, mould or water damage.

After the visit, we prepare a design and a written scope that describes what is included, the products and finishes, and the sequence of work. You can take your time to review it, ask questions and request changes before anything is booked.

How a renovation runs

1. Consultation and measure

We visit your home, measure the room and discuss your ideas, needs and timing.

2. Design and selections

We prepare a layout and help you choose tiles, tapware, vanities, screens and lighting. Samples help you see how finishes look together.

3. Written scope and quotation

You receive a detailed written scope and quotation, so you know exactly what is included.

4. Preparation

We confirm dates, order materials, arrange any asbestos testing or removal, and plan access, parking and skip placement.

5. Strip-out and structure

We remove the old room, inspect the framing and floor, repair or replace damaged timber, and set up the floor for correct falls.

6. Plumbing, electrical and waterproofing

Licensed plumbers and electricians complete the rough-in. Then the membrane goes on to AS 3740 and is allowed to cure.

7. Tiling and fit-off

Tiles are laid, grouted and sealed. The vanity, toilet, tapware, screen, mirror, lighting and accessories are installed.

8. Handover

We clean the room, walk through it with you and provide warranty documents, waterproofing photos and care instructions.

Older homes and asbestos

Many homes built before the late 1980s in the Latrobe Valley contain asbestos in wall and ceiling linings, floor coverings or the backing of old vinyl. Disturbing it is dangerous. When we suspect asbestos, we arrange testing before work begins. If it is present, a licensed removalist takes it out safely before our team starts the strip-out. This is built into the timeline so it does not cause delays later.

Comfort through valley winters

Latrobe Valley winters are cold and damp, and old bathrooms feel it most. Uninsulated external walls, single-glazed windows and gaps under the floor make bathrooms chilly and prone to condensation. A renovation is the ideal time to fix that.

  • Insulation in external walls and the ceiling.
  • Ducted exhaust fans that vent outside, not into the roof space.
  • Heated towel rails to dry towels and add gentle warmth.
  • In-floor heating under tiles for warm feet on frosty mornings.
  • Ceiling heat lamps or wall heaters for quick warmth.
  • Draught sealing around windows and the subfloor.

Storage planned around your routine

Storage is often the biggest complaint about old bathrooms. We plan storage on the drawings from the start: deep drawers in the vanity, a shaving cabinet with a demister, recessed niches in the shower, and tall cabinets for towels and supplies where space allows. Each household is different, so we ask who uses the room and what they need to keep close at hand.

Accessible and future-ready bathrooms

A bathroom that works for everyone makes life easier at every stage. Level-entry showers, wide doorways, slip-resistant tiles, lever tapware, thermostatic mixers and well-placed lighting all help. Even if no one in the house needs them now, we can add timber blocking in the walls so grab rails can be fitted later without opening the wall again.

Laundries and powder rooms

Laundries in Morwell homes are often small, dark and tucked into an old back verandah. We rebuild them with durable benchtops, hanging space, storage for detergents and baskets, and a floor waterproofed to the standard. Powder rooms are small spaces that make a big impression on guests, and they are a good place for bolder tiles and feature lighting.

Guides for planning your renovation

Our guides explain the choices in a renovation, from waterproofing and shower screens to storage, lighting and heated floors. They are a good starting point before your consultation.

Signs your bathroom needs more than a refresh

Some bathrooms only need new fixtures. Others have problems underneath that a cosmetic update would hide. Watch for these signs:

  • Grout that keeps cracking or crumbling, especially on the shower floor.
  • Tiles that sound hollow when tapped, or that have lifted.
  • Swollen skirting boards, architraves or vanity kickboards.
  • Stains, peeling paint or mould on walls next to the shower.
  • A musty smell that returns soon after cleaning.
  • Soft spots in the floor, or water marks on the ceiling below an upstairs bathroom.
  • Water appearing under the floor or in the subfloor of a home on stumps.

Any of these can point to failed waterproofing or a leak. We look for the cause at the consultation and explain what it means for your plans.

Choosing tiles that suit the room

Tiles set the character of a bathroom. Large-format porcelain gives a clean look with fewer grout lines, which makes cleaning easier. Smaller tiles and mosaics suit shower floors, because they follow the falls to the drain and offer more grip underfoot. Textured or matte finishes reduce glare and slip. We help you balance looks, practicality and maintenance, and we bring samples so you can see them in your own light.

Ventilation done properly

Many older bathrooms in the valley have no exhaust fan, or a fan that pushes steam into the roof space, where it condenses on timbers and insulation. We install fans sized for the room and duct them outside through the roof or eaves. A fan on a run-on timer keeps clearing moisture after you leave the room. Good ventilation protects the paint, grout, ceiling and cabinetry for years.

Living at home during the renovation

Most households stay at home while we work. If you have a second bathroom or toilet, the disruption is modest. If the bathroom being renovated is the only one, we talk through options at the consultation, such as keeping the toilet in use for as long as possible or planning the strip-out and rough-in to move quickly. We protect floors and walls along the path to the bathroom, keep dust contained and clean up at the end of each day.

Common questions

Do you handle the whole project?

Yes. We coordinate design, demolition, plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tiling and fit-off, so you have one team to deal with.

Can you work with tiles or fixtures I have already chosen?

Yes. We check they suit the room and the waterproofing system, and build them into the plan.

Do you renovate rental properties?

Yes. We can recommend durable, easy-clean finishes that suit tenants and reduce maintenance.

What should I prepare before the consultation?

Photos of bathrooms you like, a list of what frustrates you about the current room, and any thoughts on timing are all helpful.

Lighting that works morning and night

A single ceiling light leaves shadows on your face at the mirror and dark corners in the shower. We plan layered lighting: general ceiling lights, task lighting at the mirror, a light in or near the shower, and an optional low-level night light. Warm white suits most bathrooms, while a slightly cooler light at the mirror helps with shaving and makeup. All lighting in wet zones is installed by licensed electricians to the wiring rules.

Care after handover

A new bathroom needs little upkeep. Use a squeegee on glass, wipe tapware with a soft cloth, use pH-neutral cleaners on tiles and grout, and run the exhaust fan after every shower. Check silicone joints each year and replace any that split. Follow these steps and your bathroom will stay looking fresh for many years.

Laundries near the back door

In many valley homes the laundry is the main entry for the family, especially for people coming home from work sites, sport or the farm. A durable tiled floor, a deep tub, hooks for jackets and storage for boots make the back door work much harder. Combining a laundry renovation with a bathroom renovation also makes good use of trades already on site.
